I Outran the Light of the Sun

As an early morning runner I find the solitude and lack of summer heat appealing.

There's a certain arrogance, or confidence that I gain while running early. Most people aren't even wiping the sleepers from their eyes and I'm toiling away on the pavement like a cobbler tends to his shoes. I also find it interesting what passers by might be thinking while they smoke their morning cigarette and chug a 64 oz. Big Gulp from 7-Eleven.

Cyclists bother me. Not that I feel the road is mine. I'm willing to share. But, there's this sense of entitlement that they carry. When they approach it's like standing in an empty, silent field and the Locusts return after a 17 year sabbatical. The disruption is intense!

Everything I enjoy about my run is turned upside down by twisted metal joined by welded strips. Boisterous commentary about what's going on at the Country Club or the "full of shit" guy who chimes in and YELLS "Yeah. "I told him to get me that paper work or else!" What? Shhhhh. Bright yellow jersey clad 40 something men just makes me nervous.

Just because I don't wear a runners bright yellow jersey and skin tight booty manties (man panties) doesn't mean you're better than me. "I can ride a lot faster then I run. Really, I can."

Well here we are. For the first time in two years I have stuck to my routine of getting out every other morning. As the summer sun peeks through the blinds I realize that 4:50AM is an early wake up call and very hard to beat. That being said I lose by a few minutes all summer.

But his time is almost over as the early riser. "There's a new sheriff in town" so they say. I haven't changed my schedule! But for the last week I noticed that I'm waiting on day light. Wow. Me, waiting on the sun? What have I done to deserve this?

Quite simply, I've stuck to MY plan.

Don't get me wrong I realize that I will never truly win. On those frigid mornings throughout the winter I will be praying for the sun to ignite a Waxing Gibbous or even better a Full Moon to light my way.

But for now, I'm ahead of the game.

It's a long journey no matter which road you take. Sometimes your ahead, sometimes your behind. Just stick with it.
